How and how to remove wax from clothes - choose a method depending on the composition of the fabric

Wax from a candle falling on a skirt or favorite blouse during the celebration can spoil not only clothes, but also mood. Do not get very upset and rush as fast as you can into the first dry cleaning you get. Several simple methods are known that allow you to remove wax from clothing without much labor and money. You will have to act depending on the composition of the fabric from which the spoiled thing is made. It is important not only to remove drops of wax, but also to get rid of oily traces.

Burning candle in hands

What is dangerous wax for clothes?

Not without reason candle spots are considered difficult to remove. For the manufacture of candles using palm wax, stearin or paraffin. All these substances are fatty and do not dissolve in hot water. Therefore, contamination with conventional washing gels and powders will not succeed. In addition, molten wax instantly penetrates the fibers of the fabric, hardens and tightly glues them together. If using a blunt knife or other metal object to clear a frozen drop is not difficult, then with the removal of the greasy trace will have to tinker.

Colored candles are especially dangerous when a persistent dye is added to paraffin. In this case, you will have to fight two enemies - remove wax stains and remove colored stains from the dye.

Ironing fabric through paper

We clean cotton, linen, calico from wax

It can be considered that it was incredibly lucky if wax was stained with clothes made of dense natural fabric: cotton, wool, calico, linen. In this case, ironing with a hot iron will help to cope with the problem, as a result of which the paraffin spot will dissolve without a trace.

The algorithm for cleaning consists of 5 points.

  • The surface of the material must be removed frozen candle wax. To do this, you can use any stupid wooden or metal object: scissors, a knife, a ruler, a nail file. When carrying out work, care must be taken not to damage the fabric fibers.
  • It is necessary to prepare the necessary inventory. To remove the stain, you will need an iron, an ironing board, two napkins made of cotton fabric, clean sheets of paper.
  • The iron is heated to the temperature that the material of the damaged product can withstand. The steam function must be disabled.
  • A cotton napkin is placed on a table or ironing board, dirty clothes are placed on it so that the stain is at the top, and covered with a sheet of paper. The resulting “sandwich” is ironed. As soon as the paper is saturated with dissolved wax, the sheet must be replaced. The process continues until grease stains disappear on the paper.
  • A greasy trace printed on the material can be removed with a stain remover or by washing a thing in very hot water.

The ironing method is not applicable in the case of colored candles. After heating, the dye will stick even more into the fabric, and the item will be irreparably damaged.

If colored paraffin gets on your clothing, use a stain remover or alcohol to clean it. The cloth is moistened with 100% alcohol and the place of contamination is carefully treated. The dye switched to a napkin indicates that the product is working and will soon be able to completely get rid of the stain.

To remove wax from thin cotton or linen, you can use a hairdryer or steam generator instead of an iron.

Wax from a candle flows down on fabric

Cleaning delicate fabrics

Fine wool, silk, organza and other delicate fabrics do not tolerate high temperatures. The cleaning of such materials requires a special approach. You can remove the wax stain at home with a regular dishwashing gel. It is enough to apply a little “Fairy” on the contaminated area and put off the clothes for 10-12 hours. After this time, the thing must be washed in the machine or manually. The stain will disappear without a trace.

Removing wax from fabric

Remove wax from synthetics

Synthetic fabrics do not tolerate heat well. When ironed with a very hot iron, nylon, nylon and polyester fibers can melt, and the item will be damaged. If you still decided to use an iron to clean a synthetic dress or blouse, then you should heat the device to a temperature corresponding to the number “1”.

Some things cannot be ironed at all, and the manufacturer notes this on the product label. In such cases, you can try to wipe the stain with a cotton swab dipped in turpentine or refined gasoline. After processing, clothes should be washed in hot water and rinsed thoroughly.

Ammonia

Suede Cleaning

Materials with a fleecy surface, such as suede, velvet, velor, are more difficult to clean than smooth fabrics. Melted paraffin quickly spreads over a soft surface, penetrates between the fibers, reaching the base. You can get rid of such pollution in the following ways:

  • The product is frozen. In winter, the thing is taken out onto the balcony for several hours, in the summer it is placed in a plastic bag and placed in the freezer. As soon as the wax finally freezes, the blot is broken into small pieces and shaken off. This method is also suitable for cleaning fur.
  • The place of pollution is heated with an iron. Suede fabric cannot be ironed; otherwise, shiny bands and dents will remain on the surface. The fabric should be covered with a cotton napkin and applied to a hot iron.
  • Treat the stain with a mixture of ammonia (35 ml) and purified gasoline (50 ml). The cotton pad is moistened in the prepared solution and the contaminated area is treated with light translational movements directed from the edge of the spot to the center.

You can hold a soiled suede item on the steam. As soon as the candle stain becomes soft, it will be easy to wipe with a clothes brush or dry cloth. When removing stains, one must act very carefully, trying not to rub the wax into the base of the fabric. This method is perfect for cleaning suede shoes or bags.

Leather Jacket

We clean a leather jacket from paraffin

Both natural and artificial leather have a smooth surface and hardly absorb molten wax. Therefore, cleaning a leather jacket, skirt or trousers stained with paraffin is quite easy to carry out at home.

First of all, you need to use the freezing method described above. The hardened influx is destroyed by bending the material in half. With a soft brush they clean the remaining paraffin, and the remaining shiny print can be washed with a damp sponge.

If the first method turned out to be ineffective and there are noticeable marks on the leather product, you need to use one of the solvents: gasoline, acetone or turpentine. A piece of cloth moistened with a chemical is applied to the area of contamination for 5 minutes, after which the remaining wax is removed with a regular cloth.

Washing jeans

If the paraffin got on the jeans

Denim clothing is popular and loved. Jeans are appropriate in a campaign, and for a walk, and at a gala event, so they are always at risk. The dense, durable fabric is easy to clean. It’s easy to clean the wax. It is necessary to act as follows.

  • Apply a few drops of dishwashing gel to the area of contamination and grind. Leave for 1 hour.
  • Prepare a soap solution by pouring a little washing powder into a container with hot water (+ 60C). Soak the product for half an hour.
  • Wash a thing manually or in a typewriter.

After the first wash, it is not always possible to remove stains one hundred percent. If a trace remains, the procedure must be repeated. To clean jeans from candle wax, the freezing method described above is also suitable.

It is usually not difficult to deal with wax stains. The main thing is to notice pollution in time and immediately start cleaning. If clothes with paraffin stains lay in the closet for a week, then there is no reason to hope for a good result. In this case, only dry cleaning will help.
