How to make pants smaller by the size in the belt and on the sides

Many are familiar with the situation when your favorite trousers or jeans suddenly become a little larger in size and hang out on your hips and waist. Sewing pants at home is easy. Even a novice with minimal experience in sewing will cope with this work. The main thing is to be patient and carefully perform everything step by step, following the instructions.

Side seams for jeans

How to sew pants on the sides?

Before proceeding with the alteration of trousers, it is necessary to pay attention to the characteristics of the material:

  • composition,
  • elasticity,
  • strength,
  • thickness.

Even an experienced craftswoman doesn’t always neatly remake or narrow the knitwear, silk, polyester or other difficult to sew materials.

Then you need to prepare everything you need for work:

  • scissors;
  • a needle;
  • durable cotton threads in a suitable color;
  • basting pins;
  • a crayon or piece of soap.

Well, if the farm has at least the simplest sewing machine. But you can do without this useful device and sew the seams manually.

If the trousers are not very large, then the legs can be sutured only one seam - external or internal. To reduce the product by two or three sizes, you will have to use both seams.

The work is carried out in several stages:

  1. The product is turned inside out and try on.
  2. Standing in front of the mirror, basting pins pinch excess material on the sides.
  3. They take off their trousers, lay them out on a flat surface and, focusing on pins, draw a line with chalk. This will be the line of the new seam.
  4. Sew seams on the sides with large stitches and try on again. To make sure that the pants did not become too narrow, you need to make any movements: sit down, bend down, walk around.
  5. Sew on the intended line, trying to make the stitches short, as when sewing with a machine.
  6. Turn the product on the front side and try on again.
  7. If the trousers have sat down properly, you can flutter the factory seam and cut off the excess material, leaving 1.5 cm from the new stitch. The trimmed edge must be treated with a seam, otherwise the fabric will crumble.
  8. At the end of the work, the seams are steamed from the inside and outside through a flap of cotton cloth.

Sometimes there are trousers with decorative stitching on the outside of the leg. In such situations, in order not to spoil the look of clothes, it is better to redo the inner seam. In any case, only one of the seams can be corrected by reducing the volume by 1-1.5 cm and no more. Otherwise, the trouser leg is skewed and the product will be damaged.

We sew pants in a belt

It happens that the pants perfectly fit the hips, and at the waist puff. This problem can also be quickly dealt with at home, without the involvement of professionals, although you will have to tinker a lot. The work can be carried out in one of two ways: to lay additional tucks in the upper part of the trousers or to sew in the back seam.

Method 1. Create tucks.

  1. Unfasten the belt and belt loops for the belt (if provided).
  2. The upper part of the pants is ironed, the product is turned inside out and tried on. We need to find out how many centimeters you need to reduce the pants in the waist.
  3. Excess material is laid in tucks, with a safety pin. Tucks should be symmetrical and spaced at equal distances from the seams. It is better to make four small tucks - two in front and behind.
  4. With the help of a ruler, a line for future tucking is marked with chalk and stitched with a “machine” seam.
  5. The length of the belt will also have to be reduced.To do this, the part is cut so that the seam is at the back or side, remove the extra centimeters and stitch it.

It remains only to sew the belt in place, to iron it well and to try on the updated product.

Method 2. Deepening the back seam.

  1. The belt is steamed off with additional elements (loops, leather labels).
  2. Try on the product, turning inside out. Extra centimeters of material are collected in the middle seam of the back half of the trousers and stabbed with a pin.
  3. With the help of a ruler, the line of a new seam is drawn. The main thing is that at the junction of the old and new seam the angle does not turn out, otherwise at this point the fabric will greatly puff.
  4. Stitch the parts along the line with a machine line, cut off excess material and smooth the seam with an iron. The edges of the material are neatly swept.
  5. The belt is reduced in size and sewn into place.

Having minimal experience in sewing, you can reduce the trousers at the waist without a machine and make clothes comfortable.

How to make the size of sweatpants?

Sweatpants differ from classic trousers in that they are usually sewn without a belt, with an elastic band. To reduce the leotards by size, the following work should be done:

  1. Try on the product, turning inside out, and mark the lines of the new seams with pins.
  2. Pull out the elastic and stretch the drawstring.
  3. Unfasten the lower cuffs, if provided for in the model, and open the seams on the outside of the leg.
  4. Make a side line along the chalk line.
  5. Measure the pants, make sure that the seams do not pull and do not hamper the movement.
  6. Trim excess material, trim the edges with a trimming seam.
  7. Bend the upper part of the pants, insert an elastic band or lace.

At the end of the work, you need to return the cuffs to the place or make a hem. At this stage, you can at the same time adjust the length and, if necessary, make the pants a little shorter.

To work with knitwear, it will be correct to take a special needle with a round end. She gently pushes the threads and does not tear the fabric.

Jeans are big at the waist

How to sew jeans at the waist and sides?

Everyone has met the need to suture jeans at least once in their life. It happens that the product is already initially too big or stretched while wearing. It is worth losing a little weight, as the jeans begin to dangle at both the legs and the waist.

Alteration of jeans, in contrast to the reconstruction of ordinary pants, is associated with certain difficulties. Hard material, numerous rivets, loops and labels, as well as a decorative double stitch with contrasting thread, greatly complicate the work. Although the general technology is the same.

  1. The first step is to rip off the belt along with the rear loops and a leather label. All parts are neatly folded and temporarily cleaned to the side.
  2. Unzip the side seams 10 cm from the top edge and carefully smooth the fabric in this place with an iron.
  3. They plan the line of a new seam, sweep away the parts and try on the product.
  4. Stitch the parts with strong cotton threads, smooth the seams with a hot iron, and cut off the excess material at the edges from the stitch, leaving 1 cm. So you can reduce the jeans in the waist by 3-4 cm - no more.
  5. The belt is cut in the middle, the extra centimeters are removed and stitched again. The new seam can be masked with a rear loops.
  6. Sew on the belt, jumpers for the belt, branded leather label.

Too wide legs are sutured along the inner seam. There are no decorative stitches and rivets that interfere with the work.

If trousers, jeans or sweatpants have become too big, you should not be upset and send your favorite clothes for scrap. You can correct the situation without financial investments and attracting professionals - take a needle and thread and sew up your pants to the right size.
